Queen's Day in the Netherlands is always a festive and orange-draped affair, but this year's celebration on April 30th will be very special. Queen Beatrix announced in January that she will abdicate the throne. Her eldest son Willem-Alexander, His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange, will become King Willem-Alexander and his wife Her Royal Highness Princess Máxima of the Netherlands will become Queen Máxima. King Willem-Alexander will be the nation's first king since 1890, and he will be 46 years old when he ascends to the throne. In addition, this year also marks the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The official abdication and investiture ceremonies will be celebrated throughout the entire country, and undoubtedly all of Mr. Harper's recommended properties in Amsterdam (in particular the royal favorite* Hotel l'Europe*) have festivities planned. Henceforth the celebration will be known as King's Day.
