Surrounded by Andean cloud forest, in a 3,212-acre private enclave to the northwest of the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, Mashpi Lodge is a remarkable eco-resort. I had the pleasure of staying at the property in 2016, and in addition to the stylish accommodations and unexpectedly delicious food, I enjoyed memorable hiking and exceptional birding.
I recently learned that the lodge has undergone a comprehensive upgrade, revamping its interior design and adding an Expedition Room for naturalist briefings. Two accommodations for families have also been added, as well as an outdoor wellness area, SAMAY, set amid lush foliage adjacent to the lodge, which offers a yoga deck and a hot tub. Mashpi continues to foster scientific research, and a new laboratory is now open to guests.
