On the recommendation of the Hotel Columbia, we reserved places on Telluride Outside’s 4x4 tour up Tomboy Road to the ghost town of Tomboy itself. This tour doesn’t require physical exertion, but it’s not for those afraid of heights. Seated on benches with two other couples in the back of a large pickup truck, we bumped along the rutted, guardrail-free road, climbing ever higher above Telluride. The mountain panoramas were sensational and well worth the rough ride. We ascended as far as the isolated mining town, now in picturesque ruins often dusted with snow. Because the mountain pass beyond was closed for the season, we descended instead to the famed Bridal Veil Falls, which was true to its name, decorating the surrounding rocks with glistening white frost and ice. Throughout, our personable driver-guide was a font of fascinating historical knowledge and colorful local lore. TEL. (970) 728-3895.
