'Glacier Express': An Irresistible Swiss Train Ride

.article-cta-top

Illustration by Melissa Colson The seven-hour, 181-mile trip aboard the Glacier Express is an irresistible excursion from Andermatt. The train runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz, crosses 291 bridges, goes through 91 tunnels and ascends the 6,670-foot Oberalp Pass. The entire line is narrow gauge, and large portions of it use a rack-and-pinion system for steep gradients. Panoramic roofs allow great views of some of the most magnificent scenery in Europe. A very good three-course lunch is served on certain trains.
