Two Classics in Jackson, Wyoming

Although I am constantly in search of new properties, I always make an effort to reassess hotels and resorts that I have long recommended.

Amangani

Situated atop 7,000-foot East Gros Ventre Butte, 15 minutes from downtown Jackson and commanding sensational views of the Grand Tetons and Snake River Valley, Amangani remains one of the finest resorts in North America. The low-profile sandstone structure houses 40 guest suites that feature sitting areas with fireplaces, spacious baths equipped with soaking tubs and slate showers, and covered decks. Accommodations on the third floor offer more privacy and should be specifically requested. Western and Native American artifacts and woodburning fireplaces accent the public areas. The Grill has a notably attractive interior, with redwood-paneled walls, a slate floor, black terrazzo tables and rawhide chairs. The menu emphasizes local, sustainable ranch meats, fresh fish and seasonal farm-to-table produce. Amenities include a spectacular 115-foot year-round heated outdoor pool, a health spa and a fitness center.

AT A GLANCE

LIKE: The sensational view; exceptionally comfortable accommodations; the virtually endless list of outdoor activities and attractions.

DISLIKE: Very little, other than the periodic difficulty of obtaining a reservation.

GOOD TO KNOW: The resort is located 40 miles from the south entrance to Yellowstone National Park. The drive should take around an hour, but this can vary greatly, depending on the season and the volume of traffic.

Amangani 96 Superior Suite, from $1,075; Deluxe Suite, from $1,325. 1535 North East Butte Road, Jackson, Wyoming. Tel. (307) 734-7333.

For those who prefer to stay in the lively center of Jackson, The Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa provides a good choice. The stone-and-timber lodge is located a short stroll from the shops and galleries of Town Square. All 30 guest quarters feature handcrafted wood furnishings, goosedown comforters and spacious baths. The 32-seat restaurant, Wild Sage, has an open kitchen and a river-rock fireplace, and serves an exceptional menu of New American cuisine. A day spa offers an extensive menu of treatments, facials and massages.

AT A GLANCE

LIKE: The convenient location, close to the center of Jackson; the exceptional restaurant.

DISLIKE: The surroundings are attractive, but the views are undramatic.

GOOD TO KNOW: In winter, a complimentary shuttle service ferries guests to the Jackson Hole ski resort, 12 miles away.

The Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa 91 King Fireplace Room, from $455; Suite, from $625. 175 North Jackson Street, Jackson, Wyoming. Tel. (307) 733-2000.
