Opened in May 2011, the striking Harpa Concert Hall is the newest addition to Reykjavík’s burgeoning design scene. The prismatic glass building is located at the waterfront between Reykjavík city center and the old harbor. Designed by Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen in partnership with the renowned Danish-Icelandic visual artist Olafur Eliasson, the building has stunning views across the water to the surrounding mountains. The facade is covered in multifaceted glass panels, inspired by crystalized basalt columns formed by cooling lava which reflect the outside light perfectly at sundown. The building is home to the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra and Icelandic Opera and is the country’s first purpose-built concert hall. We recommend stopping by to admire the architecture even if you don’t have tickets to an event.
