On a recent trip to South Africa, I was surprised to find uncertainty swirling around one of the country’s best-loved resorts. Located 325 miles east of Cape Town, The Plettenberg commands a glorious view of the Indian Ocean. Having been closed for some months, the property reopened in September. Apparently, the interior has been completely redesigned, and the hotel now offers many more interconnecting family rooms. CEO Tony Romer-Lee says that the intention is to provide a “more personalized level of service and a less formal feel.” I look forward to seeing what this means in practice.
