Christine Christine Hodder was recently appointed General Manager of The Stafford London. Her three-decade career has taken her to New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Miami and China with several prominent luxury hotel brands.  She has known The Stafford for many years and has spent many "happy times there as a guest."

You were most recently with Amanresorts in Beijing. How will the change of scenery affect you?

It will be very different as Aman Summer Palace is a UNESCO Heritage site covering 299 hectares with lakes and temples throughout and the property was authentically Chinese.

What are you looking forward to in London?

Culture, fashion, good restaurants and being back in touch with long-standing friends.

And what will you miss from China?

I will miss my friends (but not Beijing), and I will miss Shanghai where my assignment was prior to Aman.

What classic elements make The Stafford what it is today?

The long history (over 100 years), the 380-year old wine cellars, the famous American Bar – if the walls could speak! – and of course The Stafford guests, some whom have stayed with us over 200 times.

What does luxury mean to you and how has this evolved throughout your career?

To me, luxury means stepping out of normality and embracing something not typically experienced or afforded in everyday life.  I think over time it has become more easily accessible and is not as out of reach as before.

What are the defining characteristics of a successful hotel?

Guest satisfaction, consistent service and profitability.  Also, a hotel that has evolved through its lifetime and retained recognition.

What initially drew you to the hotel industry?

The people, service and a worldwide reach.

What is your core business philosophy?

Teamwork and passion.

What advice would you give yourself starting out in the hotel industry three decades ago?

Believe in yourself and others. Make the most of opportunities given even if they are not perfect.  Network!

Tell us about your perfect day in London.

A spa treatment and leisurely lunch spent reading the papers and magazines followed by a walk in Richmond Park and theatre.
