In an age when the traditional learning skills of childhood are being upstaged by video games and cell phones, the old-fashioned fun of building objects with small interlocking plastic Lego blocks is perhaps more appealing than ever. The Lego Group was founded in 1932 in Billund, Denmark, and remains family-owned to this day. The name is derived from the Danish phrase “leg godt,” which means “play well.” In 1949, Lego began producing the now familiar interlocking toys, calling them “Automatic Binding Bricks.” Legoland Billund Resort, the original Legoland park, opened in 1958. Located in central Jutland, a roughly three-hour drive to the west of Copenhagen, it is well-organized, a lot of fun and a wonderful stop for anyone traveling in Denmark with children.
