Live the Cover: Travel to Costa Rica and Take This Photo

The waterfall pictured on the cover of our September 2013 Hideaway Report is called La Promesa, which translates as “The Promise.” It’s an easy and beautiful 45-minute hike from El Silencio’s main lodge through the cloud forest to the waterfall. You can also see two smaller waterfalls along the way. Want to get this exact shot? Here is how to do it.

Where to stay

The best base for exploring the unique ecosystem of Costa Rica's cloud forest is El Silencio Lodge & Spa, which is also the starting point for the hike to the falls. Make sure to book ahead for one of their 16 deluxe suites (rates from $350). The eco-resort is located on a hilly site within a private 500-acre reserve connecting Poás Volcano and Juan Castro Blanco national park.

When to go

We recommend visiting the waterfall in the morning, when the skies are clearest and the birds are still active (afternoons often bring brief rains).

Along the way

This hike is especially appealing because the trail is on private land — which means no other hikers ahead of you to scare away the wildlife, and no other hikers to disturb the tranquility of the forest.

Fun fact

It was en route to La Promesa that Mr. Harper recently spotted a quetzal, one of the jungle’s most elusive and beautiful birds.
