The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will begin a series of new rail voyages to Scandinavia in April 2013. A scenic three-night journey will take it from Venice to Stockholm, including an overnight stop in Copenhagen. Its return journey, four days later, will depart Stockholm, via Copenhagen, for Venice. This new route will mark the first occasion in the train's long history that it has visited Stockholm. Departing Venice on April 8, 2013, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express will travel through Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany before heading via Copenhagen to Stockholm. This scenic journey through the heart of Europe will last about 44 hours. The train will make its return journey, departing Stockholm on April 12 for Venice, again stopping overnight in Copenhagen. The original Orient-Express embarked on its maiden voyage in 1883. Departing Paris, it steamed through the Alps, Budapest and Bucharest before arriving in Constantinople (Istanbul). Agatha Christie was a frequent passenger, and her famous book "Murder on the Orient-Express" was inspired by a real-life event, when the train was trapped in Turkey for six days in deep snow en route to Istanbul. She wrote the bulk of the novel in Room 411 of the Harper-recommended Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul.
