What: Welcoming 130-room hotel in restored 19th-century stone-and-brick structure adjacent to Museum Square, close to chic shops and lovely park. Striking atrium lobby with glass walls and ceiling.
Why Go: Spectacular décor; outstanding service from an intelligent and charming young staff.
Good to know: The hotel has bicycles available to guests; the tramway that stops on the corner is an ideal way to get around congested Amsterdam.
Where: Dolomites, Italy
What: Modern wood-and-stone structure with 163 rooms and suites in the mountain-ringed spa town of Merano.
Why Go: Private access to the Terme merano spa complex; mountain views; location right on the River Passer.
Good to know: The town is well worth exploring, especially the 15th-century castello Principesco.
Where: Dolomites, Italy
What: Mountaintop resort with 35 rooms and six suites in light-filled wood-and-glass building along a 5,000-foot-high ridge, accessible only by private cable car.
Why Go: Wonderful location at nearly 5,000 feet; hiking trails from your room; remarkable architecture.
Good to know: Make reservations at both the excellent in-house spa and the fine-dining restaurant, as they book up early.
