The open-air food market on the Avenue du Président-Wilson is where the capital’s top chefs come to shop. Held every Wednesday and Saturday morning, it features kaleidoscopic arrays of fish, fruit, vegetables and cheese. I invariably head for Joël Thiébault’s produce stand, where everything comes from his farm near Paris. The most dazzling seafood displays are those of Jacky Lorenzo. But perhaps my favorite place is the “Bar à Patates,” where, in fall, you will find an incomparable selection of wild mushrooms.
The Musée Guimet contains one of the finest collections of Asian art in the world. It is fascinating to pay a visit before viewing the Impressionist masterworks in the Musée d’Orsay, as the influence of Japanese aesthetics on French 19th-century painting — so-called “Japonisme” — then becomes apparent.
