A Newly Recommended Hotel in Chicago

As of recently, the Hideaway Report recommended five hotels in Chicago, all comprised of more than 200 rooms. Determined to find a hideaway hotel in the Windy City, our editor booked a trip there. Unfortunately, after many nights in subpar accommodations at smaller hotels, only one property made the grade.

Sophy Hyde Park

Chicago, Illinois

In a building reminiscent of an old brick warehouse, the 98-room Sophy Hyde Park is a good choice for travelers seeking proximity to The University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry and the other cultural attractions of Chicago’s South Side. The lobby-lounge, café space and a stylish cocktail bar all have a colorful, contemporary décor, as do the accommodations. If possible, reserve a Dorchester Suite, the hotel’s second-largest room category. Ours came with walls of windows on the north and east sides, a combined living-dining room, a queen-bedded bedroom, a spacious dressing room and an expansive white-marble bath with a large walk-in shower and separate egg-shaped tub.

From the editor: “We appreciated local touches such as a coffee-table book devoted to architectural preservationist Richard Nickel and a record player supplied with two blues albums (Chicago’s South Side, of course, is well-known for its blues scene).”
