For the July 2018 Hideaway Report, our editor visited Croatia. He constructed a memorable itinerary between Split and Dubrovnik, staying in comfort the whole way. And while he checked in to eight hotels, he could only recommend three new ones: two in Dubrovnik and one on the gloriously scenic island of Korčula.
This glamorous 56-room resort hotel is a 20-minute walk from the Ploče Gate. Facing the forested island of Lokrum and the walled Old City, this hotel has some of the finest views of any property in Dubrovnik, combined with a Riviera sensibility. My Standard Suite had a small private garden, a spacious living room with a hot tub and floor-to-ceiling windows facing a furnished terrace with views of a rocky cove and the old center of Dubrovnik beyond.

This stylish six-room family-owned boutique hotel on a side street in the heart of Dubrovnik’s walled center. There are no public spaces, elevator or restaurant, but the staff and management are warm, friendly and helpful. A French-inflected junior suite-like Deluxe King Suite had wood-beamed ceilings, an exposed-stone wall and a muted color palette of gray, beige, white and black.
What our editor says: “The owner, Gordana Knežević-Slattery; the charming general manager, Željko Knežević (Gordana’s brother); and the always helpful Matija could not have been more welcoming. St. Joseph’s felt like my home during my stay.”

In the center of the old Venetian city of Korčula, this exquisite hideaway is centered on an 18th-century bishop’s palace and some nearby townhouses. The five suites each have a different décor inspired by the travels of Korčula native Marco Polo. Airy Arabia, on the top floor (no elevator), has windows in all four walls with views of the Pelješac channel and red city roofs, and an unorthodox open-plan layout: Elements of the bath mix with the rest of the furnishings.
What our editor says: “The Arabia room occupies the top floor of the palace, with windows in every wall overlooking the Pelješac channel and the red-tile rooftops of Korčula. Arabia may be designed for two guests, but its barlike kitchenette made me want to have a party.”
