Newly Recommended Hotels in Colorado

This month one of our editors reports on two properties in Colorado, both of which we are pleased to recommend: Scarp Ridge Lodge in Crested Butte, an atmospheric six-room inn, and, just outside of town, Taylor River Lodge, a high-end fishing camp set on an eight-acre estate.

Scarp Ridge Lodge

Crested Butte, Colorado

Located in the center of downtown, this chalet-style lodge was once the headquarters of the Croatian Fraternal Union of America. The property has five one-bedroom guest accommodations, which feature exposed wood beams, jute rugs and baths with steam showers and cast-iron soaking tubs. There is also a bunkroom with a connecting bedroom that can accommodate up to seven children in two- and three-story bunk beds. The Red Lady is decorated with wrought-iron bed posts, tweed curtains and a loft furnished with a desk and chair.

From the editor: “While the aura was most definitely old-school, the Red Lady had multiple modern touches, too, like extremely fast and reliable internet service, an Apple TV, iPod ports and an oxygen system that made it much easier to deal with the thin air. It seemed as if we had the best of both worlds and felt immediately at home.”

Taylor River Lodge

Almont, Colorado

This high-end fly-fishing camp is set on an eight-acre estate a 35-minute drive from the town of Crested Butte. The six one-bedroom log cabins, each of which is named after a trout fly, are decorated with Moroccan rugs, fluffy down comforters, block-printed pillows, antler-framed mirrors and a headboard upholstered with a kilim rug. There are also two large homes, each comprising two suites, bunkrooms, kitchens and fireplaces. All rooms come with lanterns to walk to and from dinner at night but lack phones and TVs. The property also has a bathhouse with a saltwater pool and hot tub, a fitness and spa facility, a game cabin, a casting pond stocked with rainbow trout and a mile of semiprivate river for fishing just steps from the cabins.
