For the June 2018 Hideaway Report, we traveled to Indonesia, where even amid the increasing numbers of tourists, we discovered a superior hideaway in Bali, a truly one-of-a-kind place in Sumba and a charming urban sanctuary in Jakarta.

This sophisticated and distinctive resort is set in a remote area of southwest Sumba, a two-hour drive along a winding road from the airport at Tambolaka. Comprised of 550 wooded acres that slope gently down to the sea, the estate encompasses 27 villas with 38 rooms (all come with private pools and designated butlers). Amenities include an equestrian center and a glamorous full-service spa; other activities include surfing, jungle hikes, deep-sea sportfishing, paddleboarding and cultural excursions.

From the editor: “All things considered, this is about as nice as life gets.”

This serene and stylish resort is positioned on a dramatic hillside location along Bali’s southern coastline where land falls precipitously into the Indian Ocean. The 61 spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom villas feature open-plan layouts, huge cushioned daybeds, outdoor showers and private gardens with large pools, dining tables and raised relaxation pavilions. All guest accommodations provide tranquil private worlds from which there is little incentive to leave.

From our editor: “From a sofa in the lobby, I could see the resort’s stunning main 165-foot horizon pool, which, at the edge of a 300-plus-foot cliff, appeared to merge seamlessly with the ocean.”

This charming hotel is set on a leafy 10-acre site in the district of Kebayoran Baru, an upscale residential area in southern Jakarta. The striking public areas are inspired by classic Javanese art and culture, as are the 99 spacious rooms and suites. Each guest accommodation comes with butler service. The exceptionally comfortable 1,150-square-foot Dharmawangsa Suites offer separate living rooms with a dining table, lavish marble baths and a large private terrace; some more-lavish suites come with full kitchens, dining rooms with seating for eight, plunge pools and terraces.

From our editor: “Aside from its verdant setting, the most obvious virtue of The Dharmawangsa is that it has a strong sense of place, with architecture and public areas inspired by classic Javanese art and culture.”
