For the July 2018 Hideaway Report, one of our editors took a journey through northern New Mexico, staying in a range of hotels in Santa Fe, Taos and beyond. The highlight of her 10-day trip was Vermejo Park Ranch, a luxurious escape amid the Southwestern wilderness close to the Colorado border.

Though primarily a shooting and fishing destination, this luxurious 585,000-acre ranch, which is owned by media mogul Ted Turner, has a number of family-friendly activities including horseback riding, wildlife safari tours, guided hikes and photography workshops. The best of the 24 lodgings are in the historic stone-faced Casa Grande mansion, which includes several tastefully appointed sitting areas and sunrooms, a billiards room and an imposing living room with a grand piano.

From the editor: “The 25,000-square-foot Casa Grande is now resplendent after a four-year renovation. The ranch itself feels like a national park without visitors.”

This serene 70-acre wellness retreat with lush gardens and walking trails is a 20-minute drive from downtown Santa Fe. The 52 elegant guest accommodations are thoughtfully arranged around a natural lily pond and medicine wheel surrounded by shimmering cottonwood trees. The spacious casitas include private courtyards, gas fireplaces, southwestern-print blankets and clean-lined furnishings.

From the editor: “The main draw of the hotel is the extensive list of fitness and wellness classes. The spa is first-rate; not to be missed is a soak in one of the mineral-infused open-air soaking tubs, or the Japanese-style wooden tubs.”
