Fans of midcentury-modern design will love to stroll Palm Springs’ Uptown Design District. Heading north from the Palm Canyon Theater of North Palm Canyon Drive, you will find shops and galleries with furniture, art, books and clothing, as well as coffee shops and restaurants. Here are a few highlights from a shopping excursion that preceded our lunch at EIGHT4NINE.
While this large space has an abundance of retro-inspired merchandise, I especially liked its superb selection of coffee-table books on modernist themes. The staff members are notably friendly and helpful.

Known for her colorful resort clothes, Trina Turk opened her first shop here on Palm Canyon Drive in 2002. Today she has boutiques elsewhere in the U.S., including in Miami and Honolulu. Her women’s clothes have been augmented by a line of men’s clothing (Mr. Turk) and, more recently, home décor.
