Travelers can often feel impeded by one major factor: lack of appropriate gear. Colorado-based GetOutfitted seeks to help potential skiers and snowboarders overcome this obstacle by offering rentable apparel, equipment and accessories. After a simple order process, customers have a consultation with a stylist via phone or email to discuss everything from personal style to color preferences. GetOutfitted sends the desired gear directly to a customer's resort and includes pre-paid packaging for a smooth return. All products offered are vetted industry brands and are available for children, juniors and adults.

Despite the onset of peak ski season (and the impending arrival of Spring Break), GetOutfitted founder and CEO Julian Flores took the time to answer a few questions from an Andrew Harper staff member.

Below, Flores shares more of his company's background, helpful tips for renting and an inspiring mission.

Interview with GetOutfitted Founder & CEO Julian Flores

Andrew Harper Staff: Who is your ideal GetOutfitted candidate?

Julian Flores: Our customers come from all walks of life and all corners of the planet, and most of them are looking to save money and time. A lot of our customers live in warm weather parts of the world or in big cities where it’s really a pain to own and store ski gear if it’s not used constantly. We have a lot of customers who are just learning the activity or haven’t done it in a long time, and really want to make sure they are set up correctly. Many of our customers travel with families as well, making packing and flying a nightmare – especially for kids who continue to outgrow their gear every year.

AHS: How do you pick the products you carry?

JF: Each year, we attend a few major snow sport and outdoor industry trade shows where products for the upcoming winter season are shown and we get to “shop” around. [In our] first season of purchasing, we were dependent on a lot of external research on popular colors, styles and more that would appeal to our demographic. Going into the trade shows, we had a solid idea of the kinds of garments we were after. This past year was a bit easier, as we were able to take into consideration customer feedback and purchasing trends and then compare it along with our external research. Admittedly, there are a few pieces on our website that we chose solely because we thought they were awesome. In a few weeks, we’ll be back at it again choosing next season’s gear.

AHS: How far in advance do you recommend renting?

JF: While we do offer rush delivery options, we recommend that you rent your gear at least a week in advance.

AHS: Are you almost booked up for Spring Break?

JF: Not quite. We are increasingly seeing Spring Break orders come through every day, though, so we recommend booking sooner rather than later.

AHS: Can you make selections for the entire family?

JF: Yes! We have apparel and accessories available for youth, juniors, and adults.

AHS: Are you thinking of delving into any other markets that require outfitting beyond skiing and snowboarding?

JF: We’re going to stay tight-lipped for now on what other activities we are exploring to expand our reach. We will say that we chose “GetOutfitted” instead of something more specific to snow like “GetSkiClothes” for a reason!

AHS: We’ve heard your concept called a "Rent the Runway for ski clothes." Can you purchase your product after you use it? Is this a rent-to-buy platform like Rent the Runway?

JF: Early in the season, we focus mainly on rentals. But as we get farther along, we’re going to be offering an option for current rental customers to keep and buy what they have, and for past rental customers to get hugely discounted deals on products they’ve loved.

AHS: Anything else you'd like to share?

JF: Aside from getting people outside and enjoying the slopes, we are also seeking to help people form their own personal connections with nature. This company was started not just out of necessity in the marketplace, but also hopes to get people connected enough with nature to want to make a difference.
