As in Scotland, some in Bavaria continue to wear traditional dress, called tracht. While it’s rare to see anyone besides waitresses in dirndls, trachtenjanker jackets remain popular with gentlemen of all ages, and even lederhosen make an occasional appearance on the street. Should you feel moved to sport some Bavarian style yourself, Munich’s Lodenfrey offers an immense selection of exquisitely crafted tracht for men, women and children, as well as top-name designer clothing from brands such as Etro and Ralph Lauren.
If you plan to wear lederhosen or a dirndl merely as a costume piece at your local annual Oktoberfest, shop instead at the C&A department store near the Frauenkirche, which has a small selection of tracht for about one-tenth the price of Lodenfrey.
