Shopping: The Classic Panama Hat

.article-cta-top

Panama hats originally came from Ecuador, but Panama got the credit because they were shipped from its ports. The style dates to the 17th century, when the conquistadors employed the indigenous Ecuadorians to adapt their native straw hats to European styles. This production was centered on the coastal towns of Jipijapa and Montecristi, where toquilla palms grew in abundance.

Panama hats became popular with 49ers from South America, many of whom made their way to California via Panama. And when construction began on the Panama Canal, the workers favored the hats because they breathed well. Teddy Roosevelt donned one when he visited the canal, which helped to further boost their appeal. As seaside resorts came into vogue in the early 20th century, they acquired a wider circle of admirers.

There are several grades of Panama hat, based on the fineness of the weave. The best come from the Montecristi label. They are still made in the eponymous Ecuadorian town, and the “Super Fino” styles can take several months to produce. (These cost $3,000 and up.)

I was surprised to be told that there is no good source of Panama hats in Panama City, so I’m sticking with the one I bought from Orvis several years ago.
