Sunday Dining in Rome

Since many restaurants in Rome are closed on Sundays, we recommend two favorite addresses, for lunch and dinner.

Piperno
For lunch, Piperno, a charmingly old-fashioned restaurant in the ancient Jewish quarter, is always a pleasure. Polite English-speaking waiters in spotless white jackets provide excellent service to a well-dressed crowd of Romans and foreigners. Be sure to try the delicious carciofi alla giudia, or baby artichokes deep-fried in olive oil. Other excellent dishes include a vegetarian fritto misto, cod beignets, zucchini flowers stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies, and fettucine all’Amatriciana.
Monte dé Cenci 9. Tel. 06-6880-6629.

La Campana
For dinner, we always enjoy the lively La Campana, one of the city’s oldest restaurants. Join large Roman families in the simply decorated dining rooms for local specialties such as the spaghetti carbonara, pappardelle with wild-boar ragu, and veal saltimbocca. The pears and prunes poached in red wine are a perfect dessert.
Viccolo della Campana 18. Tel. 06-687-5273.
