Inveraray Castle
For so small a region, Scotland boasts an astonishing variety of landscapes. It takes just a short drive (or train ride) to go from a pastoral setting of small villages and neatly tilled fields to the vast and empty wilds of the Highlands, where craggy, heather-clad mountains are scoured by rushing, peat-stained streams.
Start with Edinburgh, Scotland’s most magnificent city, its medieval Old Town perched on a rocky crag above the elegant Georgian New Town. During your time in Edinburgh, you will be accommodated in castle-view rooms at The Caledonian, an extensively renovated Waldorf Astoria hotel that has offered warm Scottish hospitality since 1903.
Spend the next four days exploring Scotland’s most picturesque scenery on board The Royal Scotsman, one of the world’s grandest trains. On periodic stops, you have the opportunity to tour atmospheric castles, visit whisky distilleries, play golf and shoot clay pigeons. From there, delve deeper into Scotland’s most extravagantly beautiful places.
We’ve arranged for you to take over two different private castles, spending three nights in grand exclusive estates: Mount Stuart, a spectacular Victorian Gothic mansion; and Aldourie Castle on Loch Ness. Dine in Michelin-starred restaurants with Scottish nobility, golf at the course where the rules of the game were first set down, sample Johnnie Walker’s legendary King George V Edition from 1934 … the list of unforgettable experiences goes on.
If you cannot spare a full 14 days, consider taking the seven-day option including Edinburgh and The Royal Scotsman, or take only the 10-day Western Highlands portion. Participation is limited to 16 guests.
