Six Six Senses Zighy Bay, Oman

Tell people that you’re headed to the Middle East on vacation, and you’re likely to get some odd looks. Many Americans imagine the region to be a monolith of turmoil and anti-American sentiment, but on a recent visit to Oman and the United Arab Emirates, we found nothing but friendly people, memorable scenery and sunny weather. Generally contented with their governments, the people of the U.A.E. and Oman are a welcoming bunch, especially if you’re American. Because the region sees mostly European and Arabian tourists, Americans still seem novel. Excited to hear our thoughts about their countries, people eagerly engaged with us. In one Dubai souk, a Pakistani fellow offering samples of candied almonds launched into his conspiracy theory about the death of Osama bin Laden. We had a marvelous time listening to his tales of government intrigue, but his rather mortified cousin felt compelled to give us a complimentary bag of nuts.

Oman was what truly dazzled us, however. Muscat, like a string of pearls wedged between rugged mountains and the sea, offers an atmospheric old souk, historic forts crowning rocky crags and a royal palace straight out of an original “Star Trek” episode. We also drove into the interior, passing through ridge after ridge of dramatic mountains punctuated by crumbling watchtowers and sudden green oases of date palms — a desert version of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. Now that winter is coming, it’s a perfect season to visit. We can rarely guarantee the weather, but between November and March, you’re certain to have plenty of sun for the duration of your stay. Striking resorts such as One & Only Royal Mirage and Six Senses Zighy Bay provide sybaritic beachside accommodations. Both make wonderful breaks after an India or East Africa trip, or as an itinerary in themselves. -- The Andrew Harper Travel Office
