I always enjoy taking videos when I travel, because they can really convey the spirit of a destination. It was more than usually pleasurable to film Split, Korčula and Dubrovnik, each of which is blessed with both scenic and historical riches.
Split’s core, the former palace complex of Emperor Diocletian, has some of the most astonishing Roman ruins outside Rome itself, integrated with medieval townhouses.
The compact town of Korčula, built by the Venetians, remains remarkably well preserved. It stands on the edge of one of the Adriatic’s most beautiful islands, full of terraced vineyards and olive groves.
And Dubrovnik, of course, has a splendid walled center jutting into the sea (which is, alas, best avoided in high season). The views from its intact circuit of defensive walls and from the top of Mount Srđ are unforgettable.
