Despite a recent increase in tourism, Lisbon remains a city with a thoroughly distinctive character. On my recent trip, I stayed in a number of smart new heritage hotels. The atmospheric Valverde Hotel in particular, a 25-room property occupying a townhouse in the middle of the grand Avenida da Liberdade, will delight those in search of a tranquil residential setting. Within easy walking distance to almost every neighborhood of interest is the 90-room Pousada de Lisboa, set in a former ministry on the Praça do Comércio. And on the last day of my stay, I enjoyed the polished service and comfortable accommodations of the 109-room Harper Classic Olissippo Lapa Palace.
