Now in his 85th year, Adrian Zecha, the founder of Aman Resorts, is scornful of retirement. In February of last year he launched his new Azerai hotels group. Its first property, Azerai Luang Prabang in Laos, was joined in January by Azerai Can Tho, in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta. Azerai properties are intended to be similar to Aman Resorts, with the same refined aesthetic, but are slightly larger and at a somewhat lower price point.
Situated on a 52-acre island in the Hau River, one of the Mekong’s nine tributaries, Azerai Can Tho is accessible only by boat. The 60 one-bedroom villas come with high-pitched roofs and spacious verandas. Amenities include a 100-foot pool, tennis facilities, a lavish spa and a yoga and meditation studio. The surrounding waterways and mangroves are entirely unspoiled, as is the local Cai Rang floating market.
