Destination Information

The world’s largest reef system extends for more than 1,600 miles and comprises more than 900 islands off Australia’s eastern state of Queensland. In addition to 400 types of coral, its fauna includes turtles, sharks, dolphins, dugongs and whales, plus more than 1,500 fish and 215 bird species. You don’t have to be a diver to enjoy this rich and extraordinarily colorful ecosystem. Snorkeling can bring you in close proximity to the magnificent coral formations.

The best season for a visit is during the southern winter from June to October. November to April is rainy and is also the period during which the dangerous box jellyfish is most prevalent. September and October have the best marlin fishing.
