Destination Information

The southwest corner of Australia is noted for its fine wines, eucalyptus forests, renowned surfing beaches and Mediterranean climate. The youngest of Australia’s wine regions — the first vines were planted in 1967 — Margaret River produces bottlings of genuine finesse, which are markedly different from the bolder wines made elsewhere in Australia. The town of Margaret River lies three hours’ drive south of Perth, 6 miles from the sea. The whole area is reminiscent of the Wine Country north of San Francisco. An excursion to the Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is strongly recommended.

Vineyard Lunches

I recommend visits to these three vineyards, as they have restaurants that are ideal for lunch: Vasse Felix (Caves Road, Cowaramup; Tel. [61] 8-9756-5050), close to Cape Lodge, welcomes visitors with a well-run tasting room (or, to use the Australian term, “cellar door”). Wills Domain (Corner of Abbey Farm & Brash Roads, Yallingup; Tel. [61] 8-9755-2327) is reached by a long driveway that leads to a pavilion-like building with an art gallery, fine restaurant and tasting area.

Leeuwin Estate (Stevens Road, Tel. [61] 8-9430-4099) has an exquisite setting that often hosts musical events of note. The winery has an international reputation.
