Destination Information

A network of small sightseeing trains allows visitors to fully appreciate the grandeur of this famous mountain region. A circular tour by rail can be accomplished in a full day with an early-morning departure from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen and Wengen; follow this with lunch on the crest of the Jungfrau massif and a late-afternoon return to Interlaken by way of Grindelwald. The line up to one of the world’s highest railroad stations (11,350 feet) actually tunnels through the massive Eiger in the final stages of its precipitous ascent, the cog train pausing at various “picture-window” openings chiseled into the infamous north face.

Allow another day to explore Trummelbach Falls near Lauterbrunnen (20 minutes by car from Interlaken). Concealed by rocky spurs and crags, the falls tumble through a gorge in a series of thrilling cascades, observed from specially designed sites accessed by elevator.
