Facing a diminutive plaza across from the University of Cartagena, this romantic hotel encompasses three whitewashed colonial-style buildings trimmed with wood balconies. The 20 guest rooms and 11 suites are distributed around a veritable labyrinth of halls and indoor-outdoor lounges, including a tranquil air-conditioned library elegantly appointed with stylish Spanish furnishings and partially exposed antique frescoes. Lodgings are done in a smart traditional style, with wood-beamed ceilings, limestone floors and double-glazed windows. Request a room that has a balcony and a private plunge pool or Jacuzzi. The English-speaking staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel comprises a number of roof terraces as well as a bar, spa and shady L-shaped pool. The beautiful restaurant served average food when we visited, but many other fine restaurants are nearby.
