Set amid 50 acres of exotic flowering shrubs and woodlands in the scenic Connemara region, this hospitable 19th-century country house hotel at the head of Cashel Bay has been owned by the McEvilly family since the 1960s. Warmed by turf and log fires, public spaces include a cozy bar, a library and a drawing room. Floral fabrics embellish the 30 traditional guest quarters, which lack A/C. Split-level Garden Suites, the largest rooms at the hotel, offer the best views of the gardens. Request one on the top floor for sea views. An excellent conservatory restaurant serves regionally sourced seafood, local lamb, quail and guinea fowl, and Irish cheeses. The estate also offers tennis, a private beach, guided pony treks and lake and deep-sea fishing. The Connemara Championship Golf Links’ scenic course is also nearby.
