Surrounded by expanses of green lawn and moss-draped oaks on Cumberland Island, this stately white-pillared inn was once the retreat of the Carnegie family. The inn is reached only by private ferry, as cars are not permitted on the island. Many of the 16 individually decorated rooms have beadboard wainscoting, period furnishings and old-fashioned baths with claw-foot tub-showers. The property lacks televisions and internet but has an emergency phone. Exceptional food is served family-style at tables set with crystal, silver and china, and picnic baskets are prepared for lunch. Naturalist-led activities offered include walks along the island’s pristine beaches, fishing excursions and birding and kayaking tours. The hotel does not permit children under the age of 5.
