Once owned by Leónidas Plaza Gutiérrez, twice the president of Ecuador, this historic family hacienda dating to Inca times is surrounded by bright gardens at the foot of the majestic Cotopaxi Volcano, about 80 minutes south of Quito. The Inca House is composed of 10 individually decorated lodgings fitted with fine textiles, striking murals, king-size beds and woodburning fireplaces. The two suites in the Cotopaxi House offer views of the surrounding mountain ranges. A separate three-bedroom lodge with a fireplace, a living room and a kitchen is also available. Public areas include an atmospheric Inca Imperial-style dining room that serves Ecuadorian and Mediterranean dishes, a breakfast room and a drawing room that faces Cotopaxi and leads out to the attractive gardens. Activities include horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing and guided hiking. This hideaway is not a luxury hotel but an extremely comfortable private house.
The hacienda is located near rose garden plantations that are available for touring.
Lowest Rate: Double Room for two, $440; Editor’s Choice: Cotopaxi Deluxe Suite, $540 (all meals and selected activities included).
