Set in the heartland of the indigenous Purépecha, this remarkable seven-suite retreat is perched on a steep bluff on the shore of Lake Pátzcuaro. The main villa, constructed of traditional adobes, sits next to a wide terrace with an iridescent-green infinity pool that grants sensational views over the lake. The hotel features a dramatic décor throughout. Opt for the Rey Irepan suite on the ground floor or the Reina Ireri suite directly above it, where a pair of 16th-century Chinese doors leads to a wraparound balcony with a panorama of a dozen extinct volcanoes on the opposite shore. Amenities include Las Delicias de Maria Antonieta restaurant for pre-Hispanic cuisine. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted at the hotel.

Sensational lake views; anticipatory service; the immaculate infinity pool.
For lack of anything more substantial, I would have liked more hooks in the bath.
The rooms are not air-conditioned, but because of the altitude, nights can be surprisingly chilly. Rooms lack TVs, but Wi-Fi is complimentary.
Editor’s Choice: Rey Irepan or Reina Ireri, $330.
Daily full breakfast served at the restaurant or in room; Welcome margaritas; Three-hour guided mountain trek; Morning coffee service
