The colonial-style buildings of this resort house 45 spacious suites. The property offers views of the forested Ngong Hills — of Karen Blixen fame — 18 miles west of Nairobi’s international airport. Handsome and well-appointed rooms, decorated with framed black-and-white photographs, have vaulted ceilings, comfortable sitting areas and personal butlers. The brasserie-style restaurant serving European and South Asian fare uses fresh ingredients from local farms when possible, accompanied by wines from an extensive list. Additional public spaces include a spa, a sundeck, a small oval swimming pool and a contemporary, clubby bar. Overall, this hotel has an idyllic setting, a friendly staff and obliging service.

Tranquil and scenic location; spacious and extremely well-appointed accommodations; terraces overlooking the gardens that provide wonderful places to read; spectacular lobby and public areas; friendly and well-meaning staff.
The pool and sundeck are poorly sited and too small; the quality of the food was inconsistent during our stay.
The resort is 19 miles from the international airport and nine miles from the domestic airport, but Nairobi is appallingly congested, and it is virtually impossible to predict journey times, so it is imperative to leave ahead of schedule.
Lowest Rate: Deluxe Suite, $720; Editor’s Choice: Blixen Suite, $1,850.
