Close to the dry bed of the Hoanib River, this stylish safari camp on a private concession is just outside Skeleton Coast National Park. Set wide apart, seven tented suites and one two-bedroom family unit feature sturdy canvas walls, large glass windows, wooden doors, shaded outdoor decks and electric lights, but lack A/C. Sophisticated common areas with steeply pitched tented ceilings — including a bar, a lounge and a dining room (partially enclosed by glass) — flow unimpeded into the desert landscape. There is a small seasonal lap pool. Diversions offered by the hotel include game drives, day trips to desert oases and excursions to the Skeleton Coast, a four-hour drive away by Land Cruiser.

The unexpectedly stylish camp; the fascinating desert-adapted wildlife; the extraordinary drive to the Skeleton Coast.
The just-satisfactory food, which could be improved.
Some rainfall generally occurs in January and February but is unreliable and can happen later. If the river reaches the floodplain, the road to the Skeleton Coast becomes impassable for two months and the journey can be made only by air.
Editor’s Choice: Tented Suite for Two, $2,000 (all meals, house wines and spirits, scheduled camp activities, park fees and laundry included).
