Editors' Note:
The Hideaway Report’s recommended hotels are intended to be places of refuge from the world, where guests are surrounded by an atmosphere of tranquility and repose. In this context, it is our responsibility to inform members that the Hotel Bel-Air is part of the Dorchester Collection, a group owned by the Sultan of Brunei. Despite having prominent luxury hotels in major Western cities such as Paris, London and Los Angeles, back home in his Southeast Asian nation, the Sultan has recently implemented a strict interpretation of sharia, specifically that individuals convicted of participating in gay relations can be punished by stoning to death. Due to this development, we no longer feel able to give this hotel a "recommended" rating.

This oasis set on 12 acres of manicured gardens has 103 guest rooms, including seven one-of-a-kind specialty suites. Many of the residential-style accommodations feature private entrances, patios and pools. Public areas blend Spanish Colonial style with French deco and are graced with limestone and marble floors, leafy courtyards and boldly colored furnishings. The famous oval garden pool is as lovely as ever and is complemented by a full-service spa with seven treatment rooms and mosaic steam room, hair salon and fitness center. Under the supervision of Wolfgang Puck (who created the Bel-Air’s famous tortilla soup recipe back in the 1980s), the restaurant serves a menu of European- and Mediterranean-inspired modern California cuisine; also an atmospheric piano bar. The hotel’s iconic swans are in good health.
