Owned and restored by designer Olga Polizzi, this engaging country retreat stands on the western edge of the unspoiled Dartmoor National Park in the Duke of Bedford’s former 19th-century fishing and hunting lodge. The property incorporates 100 acres of historic gardens created by Humphry Repton that sweep down through rose terraces to the Tamar River. Eighteen individually decorated rooms (no A/C) feature rich fabrics, book-lined shelves and painted wallpapers. We recommend booking Repton or Bedford. Two of the eight new suites under construction in converted stables have been completed and include woodburning stoves and comfortable sitting rooms. Distinctively appointed lounges lead to a fine-dining room, where meals have the feel of a convivial dinner party.
