Dating from 1889, this grand hotel set on Main Street is four blocks from the base of the Silver Queen Gondola. Contemporary design adds Western-inspired elements throughout, such as rugs made from beltlike strips of cowhide, tan leather Chesterfields and framed black-and-white photos of horses and vintage race cars. The 93 revitalized rooms offer features such as leather sofas, plaid-upholstered burl-wood chairs, leather-clad writing desks and contemporary artwork. The inviting Living Room lounge has cozy seating around a fireplace. Dining options include the fine Prospect restaurant for American bistro cuisine, the new Bad Harriet for cocktails and small plates and the lively saloon-style J-Bar. Amenities encompass an outdoor pool (open December to May) in a redesigned courtyard, a gym, a yoga studio and a subterranean spa with three treatment rooms. Additionally, cooking and wine-tasting classes are offered.

The exceptionally stylish Western design; the thoughtful service; the mountain views from our bedroom.
The J-Bar is so popular, it can be difficult to get a seat.
The Jerome will appeal to those who don’t require a ski-in/ski-out resort; like all three of my recommended properties, it offers a complimentary airport shuttle.
Lowest Rate: Deluxe Room, $510; Editor’s Choice: Junior Suite, $600.
Access to spa and fitness facilities; Seasonal ski concierge and ski boutique; Wi-Fi
