Editors' Note:
The Hideaway Report’s recommended hotels are intended to be places of refuge from the world, where guests are surrounded by an atmosphere of tranquility and repose. In this context, it is our responsibility to inform members that Hôtel Plaza Athénée is part of the Dorchester Collection, a group owned by the Sultan of Brunei. Despite having prominent luxury hotels in major Western cities such as Paris, London and Los Angeles, back home in his Southeast Asian nation, the Sultan has recently implemented a strict interpretation of sharia, specifically that individuals convicted of participating in gay relations can be punished by stoning to death. Due to this development, we no longer feel able to give this hotel a "recommended" rating.
Sumptuously appointed 1913 hotel set on chic Avenue Montaigne amid renowned fashion designer boutiques. An expansion into three surrounding buildings has added a glamorous ballroom and 14 guest rooms, bringing the total to 208 accommodations (54 suites) decorated in French Regency or art deco styles, with crystal chandeliers, rich fabrics and elegant but comfortable furnishings. Five restaurants include Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée, serving a blend of contemporary French and Japanese-inspired cuisine, and art deco brasserie Le Relais Plaza, with design inspired by the famed ocean liner Normandie, as well as trendy Le Bar and a lovely summer courtyard restaurant. Rare Dior Institut spa with a fitness club (private trainers available).
