This Mediterranean-Moroccan castle retreat stands in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. The 18 rooms in the original building, plus 10 Berber Tents, include art and antiques collected by the former owner, an Italian interior designer. Most of the suites have mountain-view patios, antique woodwork, hand-painted ceilings and contemporary Moroccan art. The candlelit Kanoun Restaurant (serving upscale Moroccan cuisine) and a lounge tent for cocktails both feature woodburning fireplaces. Overlooked by cypresses, a glamorous pool offers scenic views of the Atlas peaks. The hotel also has a spa, a hammam and tennis courts. Cooking classes and guided mountainside walks can be arranged. Children are permitted only during certain weeks.

The extraordinarily scenic setting; the glamorous pool; the chic accommodations with a sense of place; the cozy lounges with fireplaces.
The spa's lack of changing rooms; the high price.
The main outdoor pool is unheated, but the spa's indoor pool is comfortable for swimming year-round, and there is a large outdoor hot tub.
Lowest Rate: Superior Room, $730; Editor’s Choice: Deluxe Suite, $1,230.
