Surrounding a tranquil tiled courtyard, this gourmet retreat is in an ideal location just a few blocks from Ocean Avenue and the beach. A three-story stucco-clad 1929 building with colorful flower boxes and green accents comprises 20 guest rooms that feature dark wood furnishings, French windows, original black-and-white landscape photographs by Helmut Horn and luxurious baths. Augmented by a 2,500-bottle wine cellar, the excellent Aubergine restaurant is overseen by chef Justin Cogley and offers daily changing multicourse Asian-influenced central Californian menus that highlight local seafood. Cooking classes and in-room spa services are available by appointment. Children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the dining room.

Attractive rooms; friendly staff; convenient location just a few blocks from Ocean Avenue and the beach.
The public areas, with the exception of the delightful courtyard, are rather cramped.
Less expensive rooms have views of a parking lot and should definitely be avoided. Most other accommodations overlook the courtyard; those on the third floor provide glimpses of the ocean.
Lowest Rate: Standard Courtyard, $460; Editor’s Choice: Deluxe Courtyard, $610 (meal plan available).
