Editors' Note:
The Hideaway Report’s recommended hotels are intended to be places of refuge from the world, where guests are surrounded by an atmosphere of tranquility and repose. In this context, it is our responsibility to inform members that Le Meurice is part of the Dorchester Collection, a group owned by the Sultan of Brunei. Despite having prominent luxury hotels in major Western cities such as Paris, London and Los Angeles, back home in his Southeast Asian nation, the Sultan has recently implemented a strict interpretation of sharia, specifically that individuals convicted of participating in gay relations can be punished by stoning to death. Due to this development, we no longer feel able to give this hotel a "recommended" rating.
This stately 160-room palace-hotel open since 1835 near the Tuileries Garden, Place Vendôme and the Louvre combines modern comforts and splendid 18th-century architecture. Décor themes vary from floor to floor, but most rooms come with fireplaces, Louis XVI furnishings and rich French and Italian fabrics. Each has a separate entrance and a sitting area with a writing desk; lavish Italian-marble baths contain deep tubs and walk-in showers. The property offers two restaurants: Two-star Restaurant le Meurice Alain Ducasse has an interior designed by Philippe Starck and overlooks the Tuileries; Le Dalí offers more-casual dining beneath a spectacular ceiling canvas painted by Ara Starck, the designer’s daughter. Other amenities include a jazz bar, fine fitness center, Turkish baths and Spa Valmont.
