Comfortable family-run, half-timbered country house hotel in a peaceful setting in Ville-d’Avray, a quiet suburb 30 minutes from central Paris. The 43 individually decorated rooms are furnished with French antiques; suites overlook a picturesque pond. Patterned wallpaper, framed etchings and traditional French furniture create an atmosphere of refined rusticity. Baths provide Caudalie products made with grape extracts, and there is also a small Caudalie spa on the premises in addition to a fitness room, hot tub, biking paths and trail hikes. One-star Le Corot, which features classic French ingredients paired with contemporary cooking techniques, plus Les Paillotes, where meals are served during the summer in a thatched open-air pavilion overlooking the pond.

Attractively decorated rooms; excellent restaurant; small, pleasant spa using Caudalie products.
Though well-meaning, service is often slow and disorganized; there is no outdoor swimming pool.
This hotel is run by Alice (née Cathiard) and Jérôme Tourbier, who also manage the Cathiard family-owned Les Sources de Caudalie near Bordeaux. Since the Cathiards also own the Château Smith Haut Lafitte estate, these well-regarded wines feature on the wine list. The property is a 20-minute drive from Versailles.
Lowest Rate: Classique Room, $220; Editor’s Choice: Junior Suite, $370.
