Set in the tiny atmospheric village of Blanchland at the southern edge of Northumberland, this charming 21-room hotel encompasses the former abbot’s lodge of Blanchland Abbey (founded in 1165) and the village pub. The main building comprises a succession of medieval rooms with beamed ceilings, stone-flagged floors, cavernous fireplaces and stone walls hung with heraldic shields and displays of axes, swords and spears. Recommended Jeffries Rake, one of the cottages located adjacent to the main house, features a stone fireplace, mushroom-colored walls and a well-appointed (if narrow) bath. Other amenities include a stone-walled candlelit pub and chef Simon Hicks’ restaurant, The Bishops Dining Room, for sustaining traditional fare using produce and meats sourced from nearby farms.
