In the hillside Alfama district, this evocative 10-suite hotel occupies an exquisitely restored 15th-century palace. Impressive public spaces, including a library and a music room, are furnished with period oil paintings, tapestries and rare antiques. Each guest room is individually decorated, but most have hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, 18th-century azulejos (hand-painted tiles) and private terraces with river views. Though the hotel lacks elevators, televisions, minibars, air-conditioning and room service, there is a small black-marble saltwater infinity pool in the Mediterranean-style palace gardens, plus a café for breakfast and lunch. A new gourmet restaurant serving seasonally inspired French cuisine has recently opened within the palace walls (open every day but Monday).
The palace was built in 1449 for the Cabral family. (The navigator Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil.) Over 3,800 blue-and-white hand-painted tiles were commissioned in 1720 and still adorn the rooms.
