This evocative property formerly owned by the Rockefeller family is 45 minutes from Lake Placid on Upper Saranac Lake. The 11 distinctive accommodations are housed within an imposing log structure and three annexes. Most feature fireplaces and custom furnishings. A massive living room-dining hall serves as the venue for candlelit family-style dinners. Activities offered include water skiing, canoeing and tennis and, in winter, cross-country skiing, ice skating and snowshoeing. The evening formality (jacket and tie are required, and black tie is suggested on Wednesday and Saturday nights) may be a turnoff for some. The serene, wooded property is an idyllic departure point for nearby water and wilderness recreation. Guests under the age of 21 are not permitted.
The property puts an emphasis on “unplugging” by limiting Wi-Fi and cell phone coverage in most areas and excluding TVs from guest lodgings.
Lowest Rate: Main Lodge Iroquois Room, $2,320; Editor’s Choice: Eagle’s Nest Lookout Room, $3,460 (all meals and wine and spirits included).
All gourmet meals, wines and spirits; On-property activities; Valet parking; Wi-Fi in limited areas
