This beautiful hotel, acquired by American husband-and-wife team Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly in 2014, was once a coaching inn where the kings of France would stay en route to their coronation in the charming town of Reims 30 minutes away. Architect Giovanni Pace, renowned for his design of the new Moët & Chandon winery in Oiry, undertook a comprehensive renovation of this historic property and added a contemporary limestone-faced crescent-shaped building. All 49 guest accommodations feature breathtaking views over the vineyards surrounding Épernay, high ceilings, glass walls with sliding doors leading to spacious furnished balconies and mostly taupe and Champagne color schemes punctuated by splashes of color. The hotel’s two restaurants include Michelin-starred Le Royal for creative multicourse menus that change with the seasons. Other amenities include a distinctive Champagne bar offering more than 200 vintages in an atmospheric lounge area and an excellent spa comprising a hammam, a sauna, a fitness room, a yoga studio and a juice bar. This superb property, now the best address in Champagne, exemplifies the reinvention of French hospitality in the 21st century, with less of an emphasis on formality and more on providing modern travelers with the creature comforts they now expect.
